Life drawing at Locations

Near the end of the second term we were given the task to draw our model in different locations around and near the campus. These locations were: the library, the grand staircase in the science block, the courtyard and the park nearby. However I had missed these sessions so I had to ask a friend of mine to model for me at these locations instead. For the technique I used colouring pencils ranging in four different colour: blue, green, red and purple. I did enjoy this project because it was nice to draw in different locations for life drawing besides just the studio however I wish I didn't miss the original sessions so I would know what poses our uni's model did in these locations

Antwerp trip

During March the first and second years went on a trip to Belgium to have a look and the wonderful art around there and to make some observational drawings. most of my drawings were done within the zoo in the city of Antwerp. I decided to draw these animals because practising drawing them would help me massively with future projects. Again I used drawing pencils as my medium since I had forgotten to take any other mediums with me. I really enjoyed these drawings because it was nice to get the practise and the trip itself was really fun, I only wish I had brought other mediums with me so I could have done some work with them. 

Drawing from Different Angles

For this week's session we were set out to go to different parts of the university and draw an area from different angles. For this I chose to use the Starbucks stand within the cantine area. I used only pencil as my medium so it would be easier to sketch them quickly. I slightly enjoyed this work but I started having trouble finding new angles after a while which I didn't enjoy.

Portraits of friends

In this week we were given the task of drawing the face of a fellow student in our course and then changing that face into your own design. For this task I drew my friend Myles using charcoal, I really enjoyed using this medium because it can bring out a nice tone on the image and if you make a mistake it is quite simple to correct that mistake. When I had to change his face to my own design I wanted to keep most of it the same and more just wanted to add stuff to the image to change it. With the seriousness of his expression and how he looked in general I decided to give him the look of a pirate by adding a bandanna and an eye-patch to him so he would look more like a member of a vicious pirate crew. If I could change anything about this drawing it would be the proportion of his neck to his head in the original portrait because it made him look more like a snake's body rather than his neck.

Letters

On this week we were given a project to make some illustrations of letters but from different angles. With my work I used letters from my laptop, my poster and one of my game boxes. I only used pencil as the medium of this drawing unfortunately. I did enjoy this project because it helped me understand how to draw text at an angle.

Anthropomorphising cars

After we had finished drawings cars around Cheltenham and in my case Bishop's Stortford we then had to change these cars by anthropomorphising them into our own characters. Whereas I slightly wanted to make the cars look more like transformers because of issues with time and other modules I instead decided to use an approach that was similar to the Disney movie Cars by turning the headlights into eyes and the grill into the mouth. I slightly enjoyed making these characters instead of just drawings the cars because it gave me more ideas to how I can create these weird wonderful characters. However Cars are objects that I find very difficult to draw well and in proportion so the cars do not look as nice as I would like them to be.

Experimenting with Patterns Colour Scheme

After our week on focusing on the patterns, we were asked to use the colour scheme from one of the patterns we worked on and experimented with it on another drawing. For this I used the colour scheme of the oven gloves' pattern and for the image I would experiment on I chose a picture of a frog I took when I went to a zoo. The medium I used for this was felt tip pens so then it could show a nice texture. I enjoyed working on this experiment because it made me think of how I could change the colour schemes of animals to show a change in them.

Final Design

Patterns

On this week we were given a project to do observational drawings of different patterns and to focus on the colour of the pattern. For this I used the patterns of one of my socks and the oven gloves in my house. The mediums I used were oil pastels and felt tip pens. I didn't really enjoy this project because after a while it started to get a bit too repetitive and dull, however I did like using the colours in the image because they made the image stand out more.

Nigel Farage facial caricature

In this week we were given a project to create a caricature of Nigel Farage in what we see him as. For this we made a clay model of him and I focused on turning him into a crocodile. Afterwards we were given the objective of drawing the caricature in different mediums. For this I used pencil, ink and felt tip pens. I really enjoyed doing this project considering I really enjoy making caricatures and it was fun making an insulting image of Farage.

Mapping through Cheltenham

Near the end of the first term, we were given a project to walk throughout Cheltenham, and map out a route that starts from Imperial Gardens to Francis Close Hall campus. Throughout this journey we had to draw items that interested us that related to the theme of Christmas because after we finished creating the map we had to make a one page A3 narrative illustration of the route using the theme. For my story I decided to have a Christmas elf walk throughout Cheltenham looking for a missing Christmas tree light since I noticed there was one missing on the tree in the gardens. The techniques I used were simple pencil design for the sketches of through the town but for my final piece I used felt tip pens. I enjoyed this work because we were given free reign of the route we could take as long as it went from A to B and of the story we wanted to make as long as it remained about Christmas, however if I would change something, it would be the time of when we did the mapping because it was too cold to draw on the actual day.
